I know what you mean. I had a HS classmate flunk his USMA physical for asthma. He was honorable mention All State in cross country and it was the 1st he knew that he had asthma.
I also had a boss (Lieutenant Colonel) that was discharged (medically retired) when he was diagnosed as insulin dependent diabetic.
