It occurred at times here in Missouri during the WBTS/CW. At both the battles of Carthage and at Wilson's Creek Union soldiers, even the Germans dropped their arms and fled into the brush at the end of the battles. Before then Missouri State Guard Gen. Sterling Price could only arm 12,000 of the 20,000 or so men under his command. Price was able to arm many more Missourians from the arms, ordnance and materials abandoned by the recently organized Yankee regiments under Sigel's and Lyon's commands. Price was able to arm more after his victory at Lexington when an entire Federal regiment from Illinois was forced to surrender.
