There was concern that a 12 or 14 playoff was not national in scope and was involving the same teams every year. The expansion to 12 was meant to include all power four conferences plus at least one group of five you couldn’t have expanded without the group of five they would’ve vetoed so your arguing For the best of 12 or best of 14 is a political impossibility
There was also concern about TV ratings. A portion of the country was losing interest Clemson Bama, Georgia Ohio State year after year. The only problem with this format is you were going to get rematches and even though the committee is not supposed to take that into account it should.
