Scholarships (with or without NIL) are one-year agreements. The portal being what it is, if you're a kid who works hard yet is maybe not as talented as the coach orginally thought or is slow in developing...you might be searching for a new school after a coach has a "listen here son you're a great kid but you don't fit here" conversation. It's a complete mess and will continue to be so until the transfer rules are reworked to limit transferring, which will keep more kids (and more coaches) stuck where they're at.
