Here are the outlooks for SEC teams in the NCAA tournament. We ended up getting 9 teams in overall, but only 2 seeded to make the sweet 16:
3 seed Kentucky:
Pretty good draw for them, with a definite path to the elite 8. Cleveland St in round one, then almost certainly 6 seed Minnesota. That will be a tough match, but if they get past Minny, it sets up a sweet 16 battle with either 2 seed SMU or 7 seed Missouri. I like their chances there.
3 seed Texas:
TAMU-CC in round 1, then 6 seed USC for a spot in the sweet 16. I’m hesitant to bet much money at all on Texas this year, they have been very inconsistent. But they are still loaded with talent. Waiting in the sweet 16 will likely be 2 seed Creighton, their second round match against 7 seed FSU or Ole Miss shouldn’t be a problem. Texas-Creighton for a spot in the elite 8 would be a war.
6 seed TAMU:
Colorado St in round 1, then 3 seed Arizona St for the sweet 16 berth. Not a bad draw. I think they have a shot at pulling the upset there. If they do, they would face 2 seed Wisconsin, who just has to get past the winner of 7 seed Georgia Tech and Tennessee, which shouldn’t be a problem. Don’t think TAMU would have a shot against Wisconsin.
6 seed Florida:
They should get by NC State in the first round, then face 3 seed Kansas for a spot in the sweet 16. That's probably a 50/50 game, even on the road. Decent shot to get to the sweet 16. If they get there, they’d be going up against 2 seed Stanford. Think that’s where the Gators season ends.
7 seed Missouri:
Don’t know much about Texas St, but if we get past them we get a shot at upsetting 2 seed SMU. Tough match, but better than playing any of the other 2 seeds IMO. If we pull that big upset, we get 3 seed Kentucky in the sweet 16. They say it’s hard to beat a team 3 times in a year, but Kentucky has handled us pretty well the first two times we played. I don’t like our chances against them, but that’s why they play the games.
8 seed Oklahoma:
UTEP in round one, I like them there. Then 1 seed Pitt, who they can’t and won’t beat. They would have been better off not getting seeded and taking their chances getting through a 4/5 seed regional or even a 3/6 one.
Unseeded SC:
5 seed Dayton in round one. Then 4 seed Baylor in round two. If you are going to be unseeded, this is the draw you want, in the bracket with a 4 and 5 seed. As opposed to having to get past a 1, 2, or 3 seed to get to the sweet 16. SC is a good team, has had their moments this year, including a sweep of Florida on the road. I think they could pull off an upset against Dayton with their A game. Could they pull off a second upset in two days against Baylor? Not likely.
Unseeded Tennessee:
7 seed Georgia Tech in round one, 2 seed Wisconsin in round 2. Maybe a 20% chance of upsetting GT. And a zero % chance of beating Wisconsin.
Unseeded Ole Miss:
7 seed FSU in round one, then 2 seed Creighton if they can upset FSU. Don’t think they get past FSU.
