25-18, 25-19, 25-16 on Saturday. Good close to the regular season. Now we await the selection committee tonight to see where we are heading in the NCAA tournament.
Finished the season 20-8, 11-5 in the SEC, which was good enough for a tie for 3rd with Florida after the Gators lost on the road to Georgia 3-1.
While we had some disappointing losses in the last few weeks of the season, it’s really remarkable what Sullivan has accomplished here. She took over a pretty awful team prior to the 2023 season. Here are the last 4 regular season years here, the 2 prior to when she came, and her first 2 seasons:
2021: 5-26, 2-16
2022: 9-19, 2-16
2023: 17-12, 9-9
2024: 20-8, 11-5
And of course won a match in the NCAA last year before falling in the second round to finalist Nebraska.
She’s done most of it with targeted use of the portal, she had to with the overall talent level of a ream that had gone a horrendous 4-32 in the SEC the 2 years prior to her coming. Now in just her second year she goes 11-5 in the SEC (which is even tougher with the addition of Texas and Oklahoma), and many people including myself are at least mildly disappointed in our finish, knowing we were very close to going 13-3 or 14-2, with 5 set losses to Florida and TAMU and an upset loss to Miss St.
She’s clearly a great judge of talent and has an ability to inspire the players. A key moving forward is to start balancing out getting good high school talent and judicious use of the portal. Where would this team be without Sands, Vernon, Crownover, Haith, and Finney?
Great season, and another step closer to a top 16 seed and home regional. It won’t happen this year, but we were very close.
