NATO was formed as a defensive alliance. The fall of the Soviet Union could be called a NATO victory, but one that essentially eliminated the need for its existence. How would NATO react to the dissolution of the USSR? Would it take advantage of the opportunity to redefine security arrangements in a manner that would position for eventually bringing in Russia as a partner?
No, at the behest of the US, it expanded NATO eastward into lands long acknowledged and respected as a needed buffer between Russia and the West.
Breaking from its defensive mission, NATO went on the offensive, expanding its military confederation to Russia’s doorstep, bringing the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Albania, and Croatia under NATO’s banner. Not content with that expansion, the US State Department and CIA spent $5 Billion in regime change operations in Ukraine, seeding the Maidan revolution and the removal of the duly elected Ukriane president that State-CIA had deemed too friendly to Russia.
NATOs original peace-keeping mission has been totally abandoned, and NATO expansion created the tensions that have resulted in the tens of thousands of dead in the fighting they invited.
The US, its NATO underlings, and its Ukrainian proxies continue to poke the Russian bear.
