be a transition and a lot of legacy car companies are going to struggle as it happens.
Chery, a Chinese battery company is starting production of solid state batteries, which charge far faster, are more reliable and have 20% better range than current batteries. Other bigger companies have some with higher energy density than that.
EVs are coming into price parity with ICE engine vehicles and Tesla has something like a 20% profit margin on their vehicles, no debt and has greatly ramped up capacity for production. Every car they sell takes a sale away from legacy automakers. Chinese vehicles are even cheaper in countries like Australia & South America. China is a huge market and legacy automakers' sales there have plummeted.
If self-driving cars come to fruition and prices of robotaxi rides takes off it would likely erode car sales significantly for everyone. Most vehicles sit for 95+% of the time. If it becomes far cheaper to have a vehicle to order at the ready for every trip you take, why buy cars to sit in the garage or parking lot most of the time? Call a pickup to pick up some lumber, call a custom van to take a party out to dinner, or a family vacation, smaller vehicles for a single passenger trip to work or school... with the ability to sleep or work or do homework along the way.
