not to suggest that there are not other issues with the polling but there are rules for sample sizes and confidence intervals that have been known forever.

Dismissing something for the sample size is ignorant. If he wanted to prove that the sample size were incorrect that is pretty easy to do mathematically. It is also a mistake that would not be made by professional pollsters. Even if they were trying to mislead with a poll that would be too easy to catch and there are much better ways to skew the data.
