Before the highly impacted kids, especially the non-verbal ones were just labeled retards.
Now doctors know that there are many non-verbal kids who can communicate with technology aides like computers.
The growth ability to diagnose people comes through studying. That does not mean there is an increase in prevalence.
The weird kid in high school was probably autistic. More and more middle age adults are being diagnosed.
