Tennessee now at the top of the SEC at 8-1. They've got Georgia, UTEP & Vandy left. I say TN loses to GA and finishes at 10-2.
Georgia has TN, UMass & Georgia Tech left. 10-2.
Texas A&M is second in the SEC at 7-2 overall. They have New Mexico St, Auburn & Texas left. I'm calling an upset here, they'll beat Texas and finish 10-2.
Texas is third in the SEC right now at 8-1. They have Arkansas, Kentucky & Texas A&M left. 10-2.
Ole Miss is currently 8-2 after a massive win over GA. They have only Florida & Mississippi State left. 10-2.
Alabama currently 7-2 with a surprising loss over Vandy. They have Mercer, Sooner & Auburn left. 10-2.
Missouri is at the bottom of the two loss teams and is the only true long shot to finish out, but if they do? 10-2.
That's SEVEN SEC teams who all could finish 10-2.
Seem like an anomaly?
Not at all. Exactly what I thought would happen.
With only 12 teams in the playoffs SEC teams should schedule four cupcakes and let the 8 conference games make their case - no quality D1 opponents in those four games.
That's for starters.
The only problem is, two unfortunates still have to go play a totally meaningless SEC Championship, hopefully neither gets knocked out of the playoffs with three losses.
The SEC champion should be crowned based on results in the playoffs with the actual game cancelled. The SEC should never allow the championship game to be relevant to playoff selection - we're the #1 league and the top two teams should always be in regardless.
And so that brings the discussion to Mizzou. As potentially the seventh of seven 10-2 SEC teams, and with the three loss SEC Champion definitely going in, we're on a serious bubble.
But it shouldn't be that way. If Pyne continues to blossom we could do some damage in the playoffs - sadly we might not get that chance.
A 24-team playoff puts everything to rest. Makes the most money. Fixes the problem of irrelevant bowls for more of the bowls. And certainly with 24 teams in, we're in, not just this year, but likely in many years to come.
It just makes more cents.
