it is always united in crisis ...

part of the issue today with that is how easy this has all become. everyone wanting to work has a job. most pay well. everyone goes to school. we eat well. most importantly, we are not in a war nor under radical attack. so there's little reason to unite in the grander fashion. and it has long been this way. there were fist fights in congress after the revolutionary war when john adams was president, then jefferson. thus, i would not put too much into the lack of "united" given the environment.
