They may very well think they did. Voters will often say they are Independent, but they vote with one party 90+% of the time. It is FAR more likely for Democrats to do this because they are embarrassed by the party and this is their way of disassociating from it without without becoming an "evil Republican". A good pollster will flesh this out and put them in the proper category.
