Cook hadn't done that at an acceptable rate for 12 games or so, so I assumed he couldn't.

Long passes stretch the defense and every other play easier to execute. Mizzou has been in 2 4th quarter games this year and Cook hasn't been anywhere near good enough in these games for optimism against decent SEC competition.
