remember when Denver could just plug any RB in and run for 1400 yards? Yeah, that was it.
The intent of the play is to create horizontal displacement of defenders, as they are forced to fit their assigned gaps that have moved sometimes several yards based on the action of the OL/RB.
The outside zone/wide zone/stretch is run by pretty much everyone at every level these days. There is no secret to being good at it, you just have to coach it right, commit to it from a practice standpoint, have a RB that can see it well (the ball can go in any number of gaps), and have things in your offense to protect it (boot, playaction, etc.)
