our Memorial Stadium won’t be considered an average stadium until the capacity is at least above 80,000. Since 5 SEC stadiums currently have capacities over 100,000, an SEC stadium would need to at least compare favorably to UGA’s Sanford Stadium’s 92,746, FLA’s Ben Hill Griffin Stadium’s 88,548, or Auburn’s Jordan Hare Stadium’s 87,451, to be considered top tier. Keep in mind that these capacity figures are moving targets since seating is being expanded somewhere all the time
If amenities, luxury, and design elements would be the determining factors, we have a ways to go before we would even be in the conversation. The SEZ and NEZ are nice starts, but Mizzou is in an arms race and the other ADs are also making improvements and increasing capacity on a regular basis. It’s been said that SEC ADs aren’t judged by the success of the volleyball team or the graduation rates of student athletes, but by how many construction cranes are currently onsite at their athletic facilities.
IMHO Memorial Stadium has a charm that is missing from many other SEC stadiums that are not just similarly sized but also much larger. I feel that our AD needs to focus on what’s right for Missourians and forego trying to match overinflated concepts that size and grandeur are paramount. We’re doing just fine.
There are more sensible approaches in other conferences, but the SEC remains “bigger is better” for the foreseeable future.
