that doesn't mean that the president directly controls it, and certainly not in real time.
Their policies and appointments can and do affect it, but it may take years before it becomes apparent.
When it goes down a lot or crashes people feel much poorer, and indeed may have lost a lot of their wealth.
It is also indicative of the overall economy. They tend to both rise and fall somewhat together. There is a correlation, even if not a perfect one. Sometimes the Fed can make the stock market move quite independently of the broader economy... at least for a while.
