2021 to celebrate Valentine's Day.

That was the year of the big ice storm that knocked power out for much of the state.

My BIL said it was quite the adventure. They were in a 5 star hotel on auxiliar power... just enough to have dim lighting in the hallways apparently. No water.

As soon as it happened he told my sister that they had better go get some groceries. Gas stations shut down, pumps inoperative. The went to a nearby Wal-Mart. No power, of course, so it was fairly dark. People started grabbing whatever they could... People were carrying out big screen TVs and whatever else wasn't nailed down. Police were apparently not on duty pretty quickly. Stayed home to protect their families, I guess, or they couldn't get to the island because the bridge angled up to allow ships to pass underneath, and they were iced over. The bridge was shut down.

He said it showed him how quickly society breaks down when the electric grid goes down. It was every man for himself.

The airport was also shut down, for a day or two as well. They were stuck in the dark hotel with no water, couldn't even flush the toilets.

A day or two later their opened the airport & he drove the family to the airport in the rain. But like everything else, the rental car place was shut down. No shuttle service, so he had to drop the family off, drop the rental car off and run back in the rain/sleet to the airport. Since it was shut down, people just abandoned their rental cars, some of them still running. He saw a guy on the other side of the fence. He hoped the guy wasn't lying when he said he worked there, and threw him the key to the car & took off running.

So much for the beautiful, sunny weather in southern Texas on the Gulf.
