I do agree that they have some of the worst rulers

Why fdr and Churchill gave Stalin half of Europe I will never understand. Patton was right that we killed our best men and Europe’s best men when the real enemy to civilization was the ussr. And this was not a secret.
They also had leaders like Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, and Mikhail Gorbachev. Heck Khrushchev was heroic for his actions of destalinization.
But the contribution of russian thinkers, writers, explorers, scientists is immense. They certainly didn’t contribute as much to the world as the English or Spanish Empire. But they also did a lot that isn’t even remarked upon like constantly protecting Europe from ottoman invasion.
