Instead of pleading for money from the Dutch we extort it from our citizens, and I would surmise the country’s debt load far exceeds what it was then. Instead of paying ransoms to pirates we finance gigantic multi billion dollar carrier groups whose defenses can be defeated by fifty year old Norwegian diesel subs.
And instead of being a loose alliance of sovereign states we are now subjects of a leviathan central government mainly interested in preserving its own power.
