In a book about money laundering by Chris Mathers, there was a chapter on organized crime. The author posits that most murder-for-hires aren't done for money. The killer typically does it to garner favor with the hirer, they are "playing for shape".
Author's final sentence on the topic-
"The only people who offer hit men $50,000 are idiotic business tycoons who have seen too many films and want to murder their wives; they usually find out at the end that the hit man they've just hired to commit murder is an undercover police officer."
