Hearings seem to not be so much about finding truth and accountability, but more performance theater designed to increase the political clout/recognition of the elected politicians conducting the questioning.
In other words, they try to score points by showing off how terrible the person on the other side is.
Remember Judge Kavanaugh's confirmation hearing? How much of it was about Kavanaugh's judicial experience? How much of it was attempting to show that he wasn't a perfect citizen at age 18? (Is there a reason 18-year olds aren't named Supreme Court judges?).
But Cory Booker and Kamala Harris (and others) were there to score political points and raise their own profiles.
This happens on both sides, of course.
None of it is about good governance - it's about scoring popularity points (to get/keep more power), disguised as a concern for good governance.
It's tiring and beyond embarrassing.
