I haven't read that in any of the stories previously, but obviously Jontay was helping fund their bets and at amounts higher than what he claimed to have owed them($8,000).
I don't recall any of the sports sites mentioning that Jontay had agreed to split the profits, but they said the men all had a telegram chat where Jontay would receive his percentage of the profits. To me, it sounds like him saying he owed one of them $8,000 was a lie. If he could help fund near a $100,000 in bets, he could just pay the guy $8,000 and be done with him.
