and despite being an expansion side they don't view last year's western division championship as a fluke, they expect you to be in the hunt every year. So it sends a message to fans and good coach candidates that we are in it to win it.
On the other hand, as you say, any coach looking at this sees a ridiculously tough act to follow.
Not only did their coach Carnell get them to the playoffs and finish first in their division last year, but this year even though their record is poor, it has mostly been the result of draws. They have tied more games than by far any other team in the league. When you look at how many losses they have, they'd be right in the middle of the playoff pack if that was the critiera. So they are still very, very competitive. They just for the life of them have not been able to avoid draws all year.
Punishing a second year head coach for that is pretty savage. Again, if it sends the message that we expect nothing but the best and attracts a candidate who only wants the best, then it worked. But it might be pie in the sky thinking.
