The US had promised Russia that if they tore down the wall and relaxed their grip on their satellite states we would work with them as partners rather than against them. We promised that we would not add any new NATO members and that we could all start reducing our nuclear stockpiles.
But then we started adding NATO members along their borders. They protested each time about how we were reneging on our promises, and we would let things settle down for a couple of years, and then would add another NATO member.
They drew a red line at Ukraine. But we sent in "advisors" who started training their troops on how to fight a war with Russia. The CIA was actively instigating the coup that overthrew the validly elected president of Ukraine who was friendly with Russia and put in a puppet who hated Russia. They began persecuting the Russians living in eastern Ukraine, even shelling them despite repeated warnings from Russia.
