same rights via the federal government, with none of them protesting that it was an inherent violation of those God-given rights?

For instance, they imposed tariffs, I believe. That would be taxation that not everyone would have necessarily voluntarily agreed to, no?

I think they had provisions for imprisoning people and even for executing them for things like treason.
