11. MISSOURI
Projected starting lineup:
G Tony Perkins
Wing Tamar Bates
Wing Jacob Crews
F Mark Mitchell
C Josh Gray
Top bench options: G Marques Warrick, G Caleb Grill, Wing Annor Boateng, C Peyton Marshall, F Trent Pierce, F Aidan Shaw, Wing Marcus Allen
The scoop: Missouri's raw size will jump off the tape. Iowa transfer Tony Perkins is a stout, 6-foot-4, 205-pound point guard. Tamar Bates checks in at 6-foot-5 with real length. UT Martin transfer Jacob Crews and Duke transfer Mark Mitchell are both 6-foot-8. Missouri finally got a center in 7-foot, 265-pound, South Carolina transfer Josh Gray. Top-60 freshman Peyton Marshall is a 7-foot, 300-pound monster who should throw his hat into the ring, too.
It's a far cry from last year's roster which often featured two small guards and a 6-foot-6 starting 4-man (Noah Carter).
That much-improved brawn should buff up a Missouri defense that was the worst in SEC play. Missouri couldn't rebound and it couldn't defend without fouling. There's optimism that will change.
The individual talent is better, too. Perkins and Mitchell are shaping up to have the two highest usage rates on the squad. They're both ultra-aggressive, drive-first attackers. Crews and Bates should provide that floor-spacing Missouri desperately needs. If healthy, Grill is another veteran sniper that you can't ignore.
Those veterans should improve the Tigers' floor in a real way, especially if Mitchell follows the Kobe Brown path and elevates into an All-SEC talent. It's hard to win with freshmen, but Mizzou's prized recruiting class is going to press the envelope. It might not take long for four-stars like Annor Boateng, Marcus Allen, Trent Burns or Marshall to carve out big roles.
Anything and everything should be on the table for Dennis Gates to make that ugly 0-18 mark disappear from the memory bank as fast as possible.
