Ukrainians, as are Russians Poles, Hungarians, Romanians, etc. are Slavs. The population consists primarily of ethnic Ukrainians, but also includes Russians, Hungarians, Romanians and a few Poles. The heaviest concentration of ethnic Ukrainians reside in the extreme western region of what has historically been known as Galicia. Galicia was a province of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire up until the end of WWI. Roughly half of the Ukraine's pre-war population outside of Galicia was ethnic Russian. If Galicia is included the population favored Ukrainians by a ratio of about 62% to 38%.
The Ukrainians of Galicia were notoriously resistant to rule by the Soviet communists and when WWII commenced, Ukrainians of Galicia avidly adopted Naziism, including the most repugnant racist and nationalist elements. As the German Wehrmacht advance eastward into the USSR and occupied Galicia, Ukrainian Nazis and/or nationalists allied themselves with the Germans. They willingly participated in the Holocaust by murdering or rounding up Jews and sending them off to concentration camps. They also provided assistant to the Third Reich militarily by fighting COIN type operations against Soviet partisans.
During the Cold War Galicia Ukrainians continued to provide the West with opportunities to foment internal dissention in the USSR. The Oboma regime ratcheted up the arming of the Ukraine beginning in 2010. The CIA conspired with Ukrainian nationalist/fascist/Nazis to overthrow the government in the Maidan Color Revolution in 2014. The Russian populations of the Donbas republics chose to secede from the Ukraine and the Ukrainian armed forces commenced a civil war against them. This civil war raged, largely unnoticed in the West until the Russians intervened on the side of the Russian Donbas republics.
