Coaches say something like it all the time: "It worked, so I look like a genius."

In retrospect, it would have been foolish for Mizzou to fire Pinkel after 2005 even if we'd lost that ISU game and not managed to save that season. He inherited a **** program in 2001, had us in a bowl by 2003, and we were 5-6 in 2004 and presumably would've been 5-6 in 2005 with that game switched. His seat should've been warm, but I think he should still have gotten 2006 regardless.

And I don't know that 2006 goes any differently if we change that one result in 2005. But, you never know.

Luck can determine so many things in football. It can determine the outcome of a single play, which can change the result of a single game, which can alter the result of a single season, which can change the trajectory of a player's career, which can determine the fate of an entire program. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

I think often of the phrase "chance favors the prepared mind." A talented, well-coached team is (among other things) prepared to take advantage of the opportunities they get. So when luck bounces a ball their way, the prepared team takes advantage. That might be one of the true differences between a Nick Saban and a Gary Pinkel - how prepared is your team to take advantage when luck shines on you, vs not?
