Most pilgrims were welcomed to travel and visit the holy land under Muslim protection until a change in power took place in the Muslim world. That change caused the Christian response of the crusades where the Crusaders cleaned up the area and reclaimed Jerusalem and other holy sites. That unfortunately did not last and Jerusalem was conquered by the Muslims. Since that time the Muslims and Christians who stayed behind in the Holy Land have lived in relative peace together as Palestinians, Syrians, and Lebanese. There were even large Christian minorities in Iraq, Iran, Egypt which have been decimated by the Neocons.
