Maybe they should go back to competitive examinations to gain MA nominations. In 1971 during my senior year in HS I was offered an AF Academy nomination by Sen. Symington. Vietnam was still going on and I didn't want to serve in the military. I turned the nomination down. I preferred to take my chances with the draft, since they had a lottery in place and the numbers drafted had been going down for previous year or so. When they held the next lottery, my birthday pulled either 23 or 32. I don't really recall now. A few months after settling in on campus, I got my draft notice in the mail. My folks put my letter from Pres. Nixon in an envelope and mailed it to my fraternity house. They didn't even call me to tell me it was on the way. LOL!
