It does not take into account sales, nor changes in purchasing habits (i.e. trading down, going to generics, etc.)
I trust more what the large stores are saying in buying patterns as a general indicator.
It is the same with medication costs. when I get medication, the "list price" is $500, but I pay like $8 for it.
