the dictionary captures word usage; it doesn’t presuppose usage. the first entry is the most common use, even if it is incorrect usage (like “literally” meaning “figuratively”).

inflation is a monetary phenomenon. it is only an increase in the money supply. that a large number of people are ignorant to this does not change this fact.
