The Navalny brew-ha-ha is curious. From what I've read, he was not generally thought of as a national political figure, let alone an opposition leader by the Russian public. Navalny's reputation was a construct of Western European hopes for the emergence of such a person to challenge Putin. I had not heard his name until he was dead.
