Aidan Shaw uses NIL money to start scholarship fund
The introduction of Name, Image and Likeness sponsorships to college athletics was controversial to some fans given the immense amount of opportunities already afforded to some athletes.
However, not all players have utilized NIL opportunities solely for personal gain.
Missouri forward Aidan Shaw proved this when he announced his “AS23 scholarships” in January.
According to his website, Shaw is awarding three scholarships to high school seniors in the Kansas City metropolitan area, where he was raised, following the conclusion of this season.
“Growing up, my family really instilled in me (the value of) giving back to the community,” Shaw said. “I’m on scholarship, going to school for free, so giving back was something I felt I needed to do.”
As a part of NIL, Shaw has sold merch on his website featuring the AS23 logo and illustrations inspired by his love for innovative design. The forward also makes himself available for paid appearances and shoutouts through Opendorse, a popular NIL marketplace of athletes offering promotional services.
Shaw says that he has been blessed through NIL and hopes to pay it forward to others.
“The conversation came up with my parents,” Shaw said. “We talked about it, and it sounds like nobody really has been doing it. So I was like, ‘Why not?’”
The flagship scholarship, named the AS23 Pick Two scholarship, will award $2,000 to two outstanding seniors in the area with a 3.5 grade-point average and at least 10 documented hours of community service in the last year.
An additional student from Blue Valley High School in Overland Park, Kansas (Shaw’s alma mater), will receive a $1,000 scholarship for meeting the same qualifications.
The recipients of these awards will be selected April 7 and will be announced on Shaw’s social media profiles.
