Gates to be fired [at this point] – it's prohibitively expensive."
To expound on that...
After last season, I thought there was a *possibility* he could succeed here. But as I've consistently stated, I would *not* have given him an extension or buyout enhancement – let alone a $25M one! Gates was still unproven, and there was reason to believe (well documented in my posting history) that last season was a mirage.
So to summarize, if I had been the AD instead of DRF...
(1) Gates never would have been hired in the first place. His best team at Cleveland State had a Kenpom ranking of 169, and he regressed from year 2 to year 3 (Kenpom 197).
(2) If I had *inherited* Gates from my predecessor, I wouldn't have fired him after last season obviously, but I wouldn't have given him an extension or buyout enhancement either – which I made abundantly clear at the time (and was smeared for as a "racist" by people who were completely fooled by the win total).
(3) Yes, I would fire him after this season if the buyout were under $5M (or up to $8M if I had a *proven winner* lined up to replace him). With a buyout greater than $5-8M, however, I would keep Gates for the time being, but steer an extra $2-3M to his "NIL" coffers – to compensate for his lack of coaching. I'd continue propping up the basketball program with "NIL" (enough to prevent it from collapsing) until it's no longer prohibitively expensive to fire him.
I can't be any more clear than that.
