Jefferson was independently wealthy by virtue of his marriage. Unlike today's politicians who become wealthy by being a professional politician (e.g., Biden), Jefferson was to a defining extent an idealist that sought to serve his fellow citizens by protecting individual liberty which he believed required limiting the power of the federal government. Jefferson spent the last 17 years of his life as a private citizen.
As to the point made in my OP, there is absolutely no doubt he would be appalled by the power that has accumulated to the federal government and its veritable army of unelected bureaucrats.
Having said that, there is no doubt his life was full of contradictions.
