...is out of control and is no longer an institution driven principally by the objective of maximizing "life, liberty and pursuit of happiness" for the nation's citizens. No government is prefect, but ours became a lot more imperfect by the passage of the 16th and 17th amendments. Selection of Senators by state legislatures was a key pillar of the Constitution’s architecture, ensuring that the Senate would be a bulwark for decentralized government. Together with the 16th Amendment establishing an income tax, the 17th Amendment helped transform the states into little more than administrative units for the federal behemoth.
The federal government has long been out of control, and it is only getting worse. Prime example: the degree of control by an unelected fourth branch of federal government never envisioned by the Founding Fathers and outside the reach of effective Congressional oversight: the federal intelligence agencies, and their partnership with a partisan DOJ.
