I strongly advise you check on PBS piece on Italians in America. A bit more than a hundred years ago, Italians were vilified and spat upon in a way far harsher than citizens' responses to current immigration.
What heritage, what culture? We have been an amalgam of multiple cultures for hundreds of years.
What values? Like the golden rule maybe, that Confucism was promoted 600 years before Christ. Human values that honor and respect honesty, honest work, family, decency, caring for the elderly (which American culture sub-contracts). So what are you talking about?
