Yes, much like ESPN has been doing for years SI has decided that the correct business approach in a dwindling market is to alienate as many of your remaining supporters as possible.
But SI was already dying before they decided to drive it off a cliff. SI was king back in the days that George Michael's Sports Machine was big. They were great in the time when most people got their sports from the daily paper and local news. They were the best at long-form sports journalism.
The problem they have, just like local papers and news, is that people can now get that same content from multiple other sources and have it instantly. By the time SI gets it out it is already old news. They tried to transition to digital media but others were already doing it better.
I don't remember the last time I intentionally went to SI for a story. When I Google a particular topic I never choose the SI source unless there are no other options.
