Furthermore, Drink never had a team as bad as this one – and football is a far more competitive sport (especially in the SEC). You need dozens of high-caliber players, not just 2 or 3 like in basketball.
I have excellent intuition when it comes to coaches and evaluating their intangibles; no one on this board has had higher predictive accuracy.
It was clear that Drink had the "it" factor, and he proved to be an elite recruiter *before* NIL took off, landing back-to-back classes that were the highest ranked of all-time for the program.
Gates has some 4-star high school recruits coming in – secured via NIL – but none of them are expected to have an immediate impact. Now, if our incoming HS class had multiple 5-star phenoms ready to contribute – like Duke & Kentucky – I'd be more optimistic... but we have 0. And there's no guarantee the incoming 4-stars will stick around long enough to contribute to the program (especially if Gates has more seasons like the current one).
