Thank goodness for the transfer portal.
Class of 2025 recruiting primer: Fast starts for Georgia, Alabama, Notre Dame
By Grace Raynor
The end of the 2023 early signing period is upon us. The majority of prospects who signed early did so Wednesday, with the final stragglers having until the end of Friday to get their paperwork in.
But recruiting rarely stops, and soon, programs will turn their full attention toward the Class of 2025.
Coaches will take a short break from the trail for the holidays, with the dead period running through Jan. 11. But starting Jan. 12, the contact period opens back up, allowing coaches to hit the road for evaluations and in-person conversations.
Consider this your way-too-early Class of 2025 primer as we dig into what the next round of top recruits is up to.
Top prospects making early decisions:
More than 20 percent of the top 100 prospects in the Class of 2025 have already issued a commitment — a sign of just how fast recruiting moves in the new landscape of college football. Eight of the 21 who have announced a decision are headed to Alabama or Georgia. Five are committed to Oregon or Ohio State, and two are committed to Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish lead the nation with 11 commitments overall, including seven from four-star prospects.
If it feels as though the rich are getting richer, well, they are. Georgia, which has wrapped up the Class of 2024 recruiting crown, has six blue-chippers among its seven commits, including two top-15 players, five-star defensive lineman Justus Terry of Manchester (Ga.) High School and five-star tight end Elyiss Williams of Camden County (Ga.) High School. The Bulldogs have not done great in Georgia in recent cycles but could be on to something in the Class of 2025, with six of their seven commits hailing from the Peach State.
Clemson is the only ACC or Big 12 program with a commitment from a top-100 player — running back Gideon Davidson of Lynchburg (Va.) Christian Academy.
Georgia's recruiting paradox: How are the Bulldogs so dominant without dominating their state?
Bryce Underwood commits soon:
This cycle might be coming to a close, but it won’t be long until we have some fireworks with the upcoming class — most notably from the nation’s top prospect, five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood, who plans to issue a commitment Jan. 6.
Underwood, who got the best of Notre Dame-bound quarterback CJ Carr in this year’s Michigan high school playoffs, threw for 3,000-plus yards as a junior with 41 touchdowns and only three interceptions. He visited Alabama last week and Michigan in November for the Ohio State game. LSU got him on campus in October after he visited Penn State and Colorado in September. He released his top seven in November: Alabama, Colorado, Michigan, LSU, Oregon, Penn State and Florida State.
Underwood has two crystal ball predictions from 247Sports to LSU. The Tigers signed four-star Rickie Collins in the Class of 2023 and four-star Colin Hurley in the Class of 2024, in addition to landing a commitment from Vanderbilt transfer AJ Swann, who has two years of eligibility remaining. Garrett Nussmeier, who backed up Jayden Daniels the last two seasons, will be in his fourth season in the program in 2024.
LSU already has a commitment from the top wide receiver in the 2025 class, Dakorien Moore, who plays at Texas power Duncanville High School. He is ranked No. 4 overall.
Texas’ footprint:
Something to keep an eye on this cycle: where Texas — which joins the SEC next season — goes for talent.
The Longhorns haven’t signed a player from the state of Georgia since the Class of 2019 but have been making inroads in the Peach State, at least one high school coach said.
“Anybody that spends time around (Georgia coach Kirby Smart), it’s amazing,” said Travis Noland, the coach at Jefferson High School, about 20 miles northwest of Athens. “He knows everything that’s going on in the state of Georgia in recruiting: players, knowing who players are, what school they’re at, knowing the coaches. But you can say the same thing about Texas.”
The Longhorns have just three commits in the Class of 2025, but their tight end — four-star Emaree Winston — is from Calhoun (Ga.) High School, and their quarterback, four-star KJ Lacey, is from Saraland, Ala. It doesn’t seem like a coincidence that just as the Longhorns are joining the SEC, they’re also creeping deeper into the league’s footprint for talent.
Auburn will be a team to watch:
Auburn hasn’t competed for a national championship since 2013 and hasn’t won 10 games in a season since 2017. But Hugh Freeze’s 2024 class ranks No. 7 in the nation with 21 commits (including 15 blue-chippers) and an average player rating of 91.99. And it looks like the Tigers’ Class of 2025 could be one to watch, as well.
Auburn already has seven 2025 commits, including five blue-chippers and two top-125 prospects.
