nowadays is a lot of guys get a head coaching offer when they're young, in their 30s.

In decades past, coaches almost always spent 10-20 years as assistants before even sniffing a head coach job.

Look at Nick Saban. Probably the greatest coach ever.

Spent 1973-1989 as an assistant coach before he got his first HC job at Toledo
