November 6, 1989 - 32 years-ago today, 16 year-old Roosevelt High School student, Palestina "Tina" Isa is held down by her mother, & stabbed to death by her father in America's first recorded "honor killing".
Zein Isa was a Palestinian immigrant who had moved to St Louis with his Brazilian-born wife & their four daughters, after living in the West Bank, Puerto Rico, & Brazil. The three oldest girls had been wed into arranged marriages, & that was also their intent with Tina. But Tina was only interested in being an American teenager.
An honor student, she played high school soccer against her father's wishes. And despite his objections, she also went to the junior prom, only to be forcibly removed by family members. She had taken a part-time job at a Wendys restaurant, and began seeing a black classmate.
After her murder, Zein & Maria called the police, & in showing them a small cut on his hand, told them he had killed her in self-defense. But Zein al-Abdeen Hassan Isa was a member of the terrorist organization, Abu Nidal, & he was unaware that the FBI had bugged his phone & home, in connection with his suspected activities.
Unfortunate for Tina, but there was not live monitoring, and it wasn't until the next morning that the FBI realized they had recorded Palestina's murder on audio cassette. Realizing what has happened, the agents hear Tina screaming, begging her mother for help, and her mother only telling her to shut up. Over a period of eight minutes, Tina was stabbed in the chest six times. Although they knew it would blow their cover, the FBI knew they had to turn the tape over to prosecutors.
After deliberating four hours, both parents were found guilty, & subsequently sentenced to death.
Zein Isa died from diabetes on February 17, 1997, while awaiting execution. After a retrial, Maria's death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment without parole. She died in the State Prison, April 30, 2014.
Tina Isa is buried at Sacred Heart Cemetery, in Florissant.
