in 1975, and Mizzou was unranked. It was the first game of the ‘75 college football season and the first college game on a Monday night ever, so it had the attention of every sports fan in the nation.

Alabama had not lost a regular season game in two years, going 22-0, but lost the bowl games. The Tigers absolutely manhandled the Tide in the first half, taking a 20-0 lead into the locker room. The fg kicker, Tim Gibbons, hit a walk off 46 yard field goal as time expired in the first half. The ball hit the cross bar and bounced over, adding insult to injury.

I watched the game at a fellow alum’s apartment with a living room full of Mizzou fans going wild. I don’t mind admitting that I was still drunk when I showed up for work the next day.

Believe it or not, a group of kU students sent a congratulatory telegram to Mizzou’s Athletic Department immediately following that game.

Mizzou was ranked #5 in the nation that week.
