The best response would have been to call the school on their bluff and let them have a one-man women's swim team.

Women have the power to end this. Simply refuse to compete against males. In individual events go to the starting line and just remain there letting the guy compete against himself. In team sports just refuse to take the field.

If women wish for women's sports to remain then they must take a stand before this becomes normalized.
