made or not made, its often not 100% clearcut and this call is one of the hardest to make. (Also, some of them will be in effect almost exactly a 50/50 situation.) First the defender cannot step too soon in front of a dribbler without giving him time to change course. But assuming he is in position in time, by the refs opinion, and the D does not change steps OR does not lean sideways into the dribbler, and if the dribbler hits him rather solidly, it would constitute a charge. IMO. If the D is set but the contact is minimal, in today's game it should be left uncalled on either side. IMO. Contact is far more than it was years ago, its constant and unavoidable given today's game.
As to bad, or terrible, calls I've often seen the D in place, hands straight up, no movement, he's slammed, maybe knocked down, AND IT'S A GODDAM BLOCK.
Thats why I'd like a replay monitor. Enough bad calls like that and the ref should lose pay. Or be fired.
