It's harder and harder for defense to carry a team anymore

best thing they can do is get as many stops as possible and keep you in the game, which our defense generally did most of last year. It was easily enough to win 8-9 games.
We're in an era that good to great offense is going to find a way to get yards and points even against great defense. If the offense doesn't do their part and move the chains consistently, avoid mistakes, and put up some points, you're going to have a lot of frustrating losses (Auburn, UK, Florida immediately come to mind).
I don't know if there is a percentage of drives that end in a 3 and out category, but we almost certainly would have been one of the worst in the nation last year in that. Then add some untimely turnovers and 9-3 suddenly becomes 6-6.
