He wasn’t friends with the Soviet Union but he also wasn’t overly antagonistic to the point of damaging relations that needed to be worked on


Sure he told Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall. That was unrealistic but Gorbachev didn’t send in the tanks when the Berlin Wall was going to be destroyed. The next day Gorbachev said they made the right call destroying the Berlin Wall because “how could you shoot Germans who walk across a border to meet other Germans?”


A confronted, antagonized Gorbachev would not say that but opening relations with the us and outside world allowed Gorbachev and Reagan to ease tensions.
