company that had rights to it, Fox movies(?), and put the movie on a shelf, refusing to release it.
The producer & actors felt it was a very important story and they wanted to let people what was going on. They finally saved up enough money and got enough investors and convinced Disney to sell it to them.
Then they found out that the Hollywood network of theaters and promoters were all working against them. They had to do everything the hard way. They networked it through religious organizations and asked people to go see it, even though there was virtually no advertising or standard promotions.
The movie will stand or fall on its own merits. I personally think that its merits are very strong. If you refuse to see it because of your prejudice against the people who *did* try and promote it via word of mouth, that is your decision, of course, but I personally think it is a foolish one at best.
